No one wants to have that moment when they realise their loved one or friend has passed away, but it is likely that it might happen to you and it is better to know what to do than needing to wonder what to do.

Identify the Deceased

Firstly you will need to get an official identification of the deceased. This can be done by a doctor who visits the scene of death or at the mortuary.

You are going to need support in these difficult times, especially if this is the first loss you experience. It is important to contact the people closest to you and the deceased. It is important for you to talk about who is going to handle which of the tasks who is going to phone the people close to you, who is going to phone the services and all of those tasks.

Get a Notice of Death

You can get a notice of death from your doctor, certain traditional leaders or a South African police member

Make sure you are aware of the deceaseds' religious beliefs and wishes

The deceased might have left instructions or spoken to someone close about how they would like their funeral to go. If not, it is a good idea to conform with their religious beliefs and their common burial practices.

Notify employers, employees and clients

Once you have dealt with the most of the sadness and arranging a funeral you need to let people who might be relying on the deceased know what has happened. If the deceased had a business you will need to make work of getting in contact with all the right people and possibly closing down the business or handing it over

Find the will and executor

You need to follow the wishes of the deceased as closely as possible. It is important to locate the last Will and Testament and appoint the executor based on the wishes of the deceased.

Deal with Deceased's possesions

After all of that, it is time to deal with all the stuff that is left over. Go through their house and office, make piles of the various things you might be able to sell or donate and throw anything unwanted away. This is a hard step as you will be getting rid of the last things of the deceased.
